About this week’s artist:
Aida Ade is a singer/songwriter primarily located in St. Louis, Missouri. Born January 29, 1994 in the Fairgrounds neighborhood of St. Louis, the artist was exposed to musicianship at a young age. This exposure led Aida to start writing music at the age of six years old. Aida spent most of her early years studying violin and viola, being classically trained and groomed for the symphony, with some childhood appearances at Powell Symphony Hall and with the Alton Symphony and Alton Youth Symphony. Although Aida still possesses a passion for classical viola, upon graduation from Missouri State University in December of 2016, Aida decided to pursue vocal music. In May of 2017, Aida performed for the first time in celebration of her very first EP, Soundwheel. With influences such as Gary Clark, Jr., Chaka Khan, The Stylistics, Lil Boosie, Fleetwood Mac, Chronixx, and many more, the music she creates comes from an eclectic collection of musical interests and life experiences. She is currently living in St. Louis as a school-based trauma-informed therapist while creating and performing music.
What brought you to this point in your life as a working St. Louis artist?
I have endured so much change in my life since starting music but, music has always kept me grounded. Every change – whether “good” or “bad” – has inspired my life as a working artist. It gives me inspiration and keeps me on my toes.
What inspires your music? What is this song called? What does this song in particular mean to you?
My music is inspired by life’s ups and downs. This song in particular was inspired by my mental health journey starting in 2017. I had just reached a stage of change where I was ready to actively work toward different results and goals. It’s called “on&on” and is a representation of how time continues and as long as the time is moving, so am I.
Who in St. Louis are you inspired by right now?
I am immensely inspired by the musicians in the Dhoruba collective. Working with them has helped me see just how possible it is to be a professional musician. Also, MVSTERMIND and everyone from Mvstercamp, too, because their hustles are unmatched and being around so many talented and dedicated creatives keeps me going.
What bands are you touring with lately?
I’ve mainly been with the Dhoruba collective on stage; however, I’ve gotten to perform with Beei, Sir Eddie C, and Blvckspvde recently. On February 27, I get to perform at Joe’s Cafe with the Dhoruba collective and Lynita Renea.
Where do you hope to be in 5 years?
In 5 years, I hope to be a full time artist with a community art space that helps to make mental health and the arts more accessible to people within St. Louis City.
