About this week’s artist:
Boxcar is the songs of Jorge Valcárcel backed by a rag-tag group of like-minded artesian music makers. Never quite fitting into a proper genre…they’re loners Dotti, Rebels… Boxcar strives to make music that is poignant, but not heavy; sounds that lift you up and inspire. Boxcar as a project started in 2006, in Long Beach, CA; the St. Louis incarnation began in 2018 when Jorge moved to town and met all the amazing people in the band. Audrey Kwong lends her legendary fiddle and background vocals, Lori Baron is always a force to be reckoned with behind the kickdrum, Ashley Sturm is a multi-instrumentalist whose dynamism has become the Boxcar powerplant, and holding it all together in the rhythm section and snack-daddy is Dave Cicchetti on bass. Together they have travelled the globe espousing the Boxcar gospel: “Love Music, Love People.”
What brought you to this point in your life as a working St. Louis artist?
We are all working professionals that have a passion for music. Jorge stopped working as a commercial sailor in 2017 to focus on Boxcar.
What inspires your music? What does this song in particular mean to you?
This song is called “The Highway” and it was written when Ashley and Jorge joined forces to create a new song that paid homage to their fondness for the band Shovels and Rope. It is just one of those classic “hittin’ the road” kind of songs that we love.
Who in St. Louis are you inspired by right now?
All the fired and striking DJs at KDHX. We need COMMUNITY radio back in St. Louis. Also, we love Joe Jackson and his commitment to spreading piano love around the St. Louis region—and beyond! His commitment to acoustic pianos is a passion that we can definitely get behind; Go Jackson Pianos!!
What is your favorite Muppet and why?
Jorge: Kermit, duh!! [laughs] Kermit’s a lover, a dreamer, like me.
Ashley: Kermit the Disco Frog is hard to top!
Dave: Fozzie or Rowlf. Cause they’re not popular. The funny man and the musician: that’s me!
Lori: Animal, obvs!
Audrey: I don’t have a favorite Muppet?
Where do you hope to be in 5 years?
Playing music together across Missouri, the Midwest, the USA, the world, and (possibly) the Universe!!!
