On tour: Dawes | 04.12.23, The Pageant

8:00pm | 6161 Delmar Blvd. | All ages | $35 GA adv., $40 reserved or day of show

Gentle tunes and sunny harmonies are what the Los Angeles-based four-piece known as Dawes has established as their calling cards over their 14-year-and-counting career. Their previous albums displayed richly varied sonics, yet still managed to stick within the space between singer-songwriter folk, Springsteenian roots rock, and Laurel Canyon-style peaceful easy feelings. But on their eighth and newest long-player, last year’s Misadventures of Doomscroller, the band expanded their palette to include the jazz fusion grooves of Steely Dan (most notably on the nine-and-a-half minute album opening shapeshifter “Someone Else’s Café/Doomscroller Tries to Relax”) and the upbeat dad rock of Sky Blue Sky/Wilco (The Album)-era Wilco.

Doomscroller may explore different sounds, but those new sounds should prove complementary to the rest of their catalog when the quartet stops by The Pageant later this week. This is their seventh stop at the venerable Delmar Loop venue, including a late-2021 stop that was documented by our photographer, Karl Beck.

The band’s latest release, interestingly, is not being released under the band’s name. Last year, Dawes keyboardist Lee Pardini released a solo EP, Leon Keys, that included a moody, atmospheric instrumental called “Theme from ‘Lou’” that was built on electronic drums and pulsating keyboards that wouldn’t have been out of place on the Miami Vice soundtrack. Just this past Friday, Pardini released a new version of the song made in collaboration with his Dawes bandmates, including new lyrics composed and sung by Taylor Goldsmith. The song has even worked its way into Dawes’ live setlist with a new take that “absolutely has its own vibe,” according to Pardini. “The openness and willingness of my bandmates to venture into this territory further solidifies everything I love about being in Dawes.” Check out the studio track below, and hopefully as part of their set at The Pageant as well. | Jason Green
