If it sometimes feels like the world is falling apart around you just a little bit more every single day, well, Devo would be well within their rights to say they toldja so a loooooong time ago. The Akron, Ohio-born quintet named themselves after the concept of “de-evolution” and made documenting it their raison d’être, starting with their all-time great 1978 debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, highlighted by the punky “Uncontrollable Urge” and a jittery, robotic take on the Rolling Stones “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” The band—brothers Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh, other brothers Gerald and Bob Casale, and Alan Meyers—would hit the peak of their fame in the MTV era, where their red flower pot-esque head gear in the video for “Whip It” would make them stars.

Devo’s first iteration stretched into the 1990s before calling it quits for a few years, ultimately reuniting in 1996. Since then, though Meyer and Bob Casale are sadly no longer with us, the remaining members of Devo have continued to tour sporadically and recorded a single comeback record, 2010’s Something for Everybody. In the meantime, Mark Mothersbaugh has spent the bulk of his time writing music for TV and film, everything from Pee-Wee’s Playhouse to multiple Wes Anderson films to A Minecraft Movie.

Devo recently announced the “Cosmic De-Evolution” tour where they’ll co-headline with the B-52s, but they’ll be rolling into The Factor solo to celebrate “50 Years of De-Evolution…Continued!” If you think they’d be slowing down after five decades, take a look at their performance of “Uncontrollable Urge” (famous to an entirely new generation as the theme song to MTV’s ubiquitous comedy program Ridiculousness) on SNL50: The Homecoming Concert earlier this year with SNL’s Fred Armisen behind the kit to see just how quirky and weird this band can still be. | Jason Green
