British folk punk troubadour Frank Turner has a lot on his mind with his latest record Undefeated, his 10th studio release and the follow up to his critically acclaimed 2022 release FTHC. Turner has gathered quite a reputation as a sharp, thoughtful songwriter since going solo after the breakup of his hardcore band Million Dead. Occupying a space somewhere between Jeff Rosenstock and Billy Bragg, on Undefeated Frank Turner fights through imposter syndrome and tries to keep true to his youthful punk ethos as he himself enters his early 40s. While there is a pop punk sense of play on the record, it is balanced well with these deep, sincere ruminations. Instead of doubling down on his bona fides and becoming a shallow self-parody of himself, he searches for a path through.
It’s something relatable, totally human, and one of the few must-listen albums of the year so far.
Check out Frank Turner and his band The Sleeping Souls this Friday September 13th at The Pageant. It’s a stacked bill, with tour support from death folk outfit Bridge City Sinners and long running Canadian reggae rock legends Bedouin Soundclash. | Bryan J. Sutter
