On tour: Nothing More | 04.11.23, Victory Theatre (Evansville, IN)

w/ Crown the Empire & Thousand Below | 7:00pm | 600 Main St., Evansville, IN | All ages | $20–36.50

Tuesdays are rarely the highlight of my week, but April 11th will be the Tuesday of all Tuesdays as Nothing More storms into Indiana for this leg of their Spirits tour. (If hitting Evansville on a Tuesday doesn’t fit your schedule, the band will also be in Bloomington, IL, in May. See below for a full tour itinerary!) This will be my third time seeing the foursome and I cannot recall it ever being a show not worthy of attendance. Frontman Jonny Hawkins lives for the shock factor: at least once during every set he will be found riding his giant, Transformers-esque contraption they refer to as “the scorpion tail,” coming in at 400 pounds and 14 feet tall.

Forming in 2003, the band originally consisted of Hawkins on drums and Mark Vollelunga on guitars, with bassist Daniel Oliver solidifying the instrumental lineup the following year. The lead vocal slot, though, was more of a revolving door, with three different frontmen in four years before Hawkins, frustrated by the frequent turnover, moved from drums to vocals in 2008. Drummer Ben Anderson joined in 2015, rounding out the current roster for the group, who have seen huge success in the last six months since the release of their album Spirits. Nothing More has a sound difficult to compare, if I had to describe them to a new fan, I would say they’re the love child of Breaking Benjamin and Starset with a mix of metal and scream but softer ballads and some electronic as well.

Texas based Crown the Empire is accompanying Nothing More on tour ahead of their newest album, DOGMA, coming in late April. Several singles have debuted from the upcoming album including “Immortalize” and “DOGMA,” which have both seen success on rock radio. With a sound similar to Bring Me the Horizon and ADTR, Crown the Empire has the setlist I am most excited to hear on Tuesday. I have yet to see them live and it is expected to be a packed show so I know the energy will be high at Victory Theater. Opening for Crown the Empire is Thousand Below out of California. I was lucky enough to see this band open for Bad Omens last fall and they too put on a high energy and vocally sound performance. This show is not one you will want to miss, and it will be worth the trek from St. Louis if you are up for the drive. | Erica Vining
