What became of mathcore? It seemed like the early aughts provided enough freedom in the alternative genres for experimental metal bands like The Chariot, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Every Time I Die to flourish. But all these bands, listed as influences of the Callous Daoboys, are now defunct, leaving the way for the Atlanta eight-piece to claim their spot as the current standard bearers of the genre.
Following two EPs in 2017, and their 2019 debut Die on Mars, they have garnered recent widespread attention with their sophomore release, Celebrity Therapist, an outright baffling experimental sonic assault, at times brutal and cacophonous, then seamlessly transitioning to intricate and atmospheric. Vocalist Carson Pace can transition between the two poles just as easily.
Their artistry must be working, because they have caught the attention of screamo scene king Craig Owens, who has brought the band out on tour to open for his project, Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows (D.R.U.G.S.) on their US tour. That type of validation and affirmation will surely add aging emo kids to the bands growing audience of fervent listeners. The tour comes to the Old Rock House in St. Louis on Thursday, February 16th.
