The hits just keep on coming to the St. Louis theater world. Here are a few updates since we last checked in.
The Fabulous Fox Theatre (527 N. Grand Blvd.) had shuffled around this Fall’s U.S. Bank Broadway Series schedule, but with COVID still looming, most of the 2020 portion of the series has now been canceled. Mean Girls (originally scheduled for September), My Fair Lady (October), Jesus Christ Superstar (November), and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (December have all been canceled. The Fox plans to add three more musicals at a later date to replace the cancellations for their seven-show season ticket package (which did not include Jesus Christ Superstar, hence only three new shows instead of four). Meanwhile, the next scheduled performance at the Fox is A Christmas Carol, currently slated for December 3-6. Better start praying for a Christmas miracle. When last we spoke, the Midnight Company had announced an ambitious slate for the Fall, but that too is being kicked into next year. Now Playing Third Base for the St. Louis Cardinals…Bond, James Bond has moved from August 2020 to July 8-23, 2021 at The Chapel (6238 Alexander Dr.), while It Is Magic moves from October/November of 2020 to October 21-November 16, 2021 at the Kranzberg Black Box Theatre (501 N. Grand Blvd.). The company had hoped conditions would allow for the one-man show Give ‘Em Hell, Harry to go on starting September 17, but that show has now been canceled. Midnight is still eyeing a potential new production to take the place of It Is Magic’s October 29-November 6 slot, COVID (and St. Louis city COVID restrictions) allowing.
The Tennessee Williams Festival St. Louis, meanwhile, has taken its wares to the radio waves. “Something Spoken: Tennessee Williams On The Air” brings fully produced one-act plays penned by Williams to St. Louis’ Classic 107.3 FM along with interviews with directors, actors, and scholars such as noted Williams expert Tom Mitchell. The upcoming docket is made up of Hello From Bertha (August 22 at 5:00PM), Summer at the Lake (September 5 at 5:00PM), and Mister Paradise (September 19 at 5:00PM). The Fest currently still plans to hold their rescheduled “5th Annual” iteration, titled “Tennessee Williams: Something Wild,” October 22-November 1 at The Link Auditorium (4504 Westminster Pl.).
