It’s been difficult to find joy these days. For this reason, and because of my long-lasting crush on Ryan Stiles, I joined the audience at the Factory for Whose Live Anyway? The show is an in-person edition of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, which has been a feature of American television since the 1990s (and British television for even longer), an improvisational comedy show that includes suggestions and assistance from the audience.
Speaking of the audience, turns out that guests are only allowed to make one joke about East St. Louis. Any more than that and we will turn on you. That was the only wobble in the evening’s festivities.
The host of the evening’s festivities was Greg Proops. Joining him were Ryan Stiles, Jeff B. Davis, Joel Murray, and special guest Gary Anthony Williams. The show began with a game called “Freeze Tag,” which called for members of the audience to move the actor’s bodies for them. It was the silliest of games. The live show had the same energy as the old TV show mixed with local flavor and modern vibes. It was especially a treat to see that Ryan and Greg were still hilarious.
Laura Hall, the pianist and musical director for the television show, also graced the stage that night. How lucky for the audience. I couldn’t imagine playing improvisational music but she did an amazing job.
Some of the other games played were the Hoedown, Sound Effects, and Greatest Hits. One of the bright spots was a game featuring a couple from the audience. The couple were both military (which brought on cheers) and had been married for over 30 years. They were just as funny as the actors were.
This was a great night, and was the only comedy show I’ve ever been to where literally everyone was laughing. Well done. | Melissa Cynova
