The British shoegaze OGs known as Slowdive are bringing textural nirvana to The Pageant on May 4th, 2024. If you can believe it, this is the band’s first time playing St. Louis in their nearly 35-year history. With everything else going on in the world, be happy you are at least alive for this. Slowdive were, perhaps rather infamously, underrated in their early days and some would argue that the group never got the respect they deserved until recently. Their awe-inspiring 2017 self-titled release is among the strongest comeback records of any indie band from the ’90s, proving that their critics were very wrong and your coolest friend when you were 24 was, in fact, incredibly correct.
Slowdive’s new record everything is alive, released last year on Indiana label Dead Oceans, is a fantastistic expression of the washed out guitars and dreamy vocals that the band is known for, but with some early new wave sensibilities balancing out the more modern elements of the album’s production. It’s a record that begs to be listened to on a proper hi-fi in the living room, on good headphones with your eyes closed, or on the ride home after a late night out. Guitarist and lead songwriter Neil Halstead originally sketched out part of the album with a modular synth set up back in 2019, and there’s a certain electronic structure that remains in the final recordings that the more organic elements play off of nicely. Even if it is not a massive step forward for the band, it is an undoubtedly lush and enjoyable one.
Almost all of Slowdive’s dates on their recent European tour sold out, and the word on the street is that their date at The Pageant is getting very low on tickets. While there are many shoegaze inspired-bands like Hotline TNT and Soft Cult carrying the torch, this is a rare chance to see one of the genre’s best first wave bands.
