“Family” wasn’t just a hit song belted by Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors on Saturday; it was the theme of the night. The atmosphere at Saint Louis Music Park was one of laughter and enjoyment as concertgoers enjoyed the beautiful weather while taking in performances from Mr. Holcomb and co., who accompanied Darius Rucker on the Starting Fires Tour. Holcomb played through hits including “Find Your People” and “Gratitude” off their recently released album Strangers No More. The band embodies the word optimism, with an upbeat sound that refuses to allow the listener to feel sad, even through slower songs. I found myself smiling often through the show, even at times when I wasn’t really hearing the music as I was lost in my camera. The addition of keys and a standup bass made for a melodic yet cheerful sound that had everyone bobbing along to the beat. At times I pulled Avett Brothers vibes, but Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors are able to set themselves apart from other folk bands. The intro to “Gratitude” reminded me of one of my favorite Mazzy Star songs, but quickly the song morphed into a soulful ballad that gave me goosebumps. Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors continue their tour through the end of the year, both as a supporting act and headliner.

Hootie without his blowfish, AKA Darius Rucker, performed following Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors. Always a lively performer, Rucker did not disappoint with larger-than-life energy and a crowd that matched him. Sporting a Corona Premier as he danced his way across the stage, Rucker played through hit songs both from his solo career as well as his roster with Hootie and the Blowfish. The setlist didn’t stop there, however, with the band performing multiple covers including “Waterfalls” by TLC and of course the infamous “Wagon Wheel,” originally done by Old Crow Medicine Show. Rucker’s blinding smile was present through the set, and his ability to dance and sing impressed me as I struggle to walk and breathe simultaneously most days. The Starting Fires Tour continues through October with the bands heading west before returning for a final date in Nashville, TN. | Erica Vining
