Picture it: Sicily 1922 Missouri 2022. A figure shrouded in robes takes the stage to chants of “WHORE” with a smug smile of satisfaction. Few women embrace the title in a way that rock legend Maria Brink does, taking it one step further and emblazing her wardrobe with her favorite term of endearment. Grabbing my trusty Samsung, I took a photo that night that inspired my entire journey into concert photography. Nearly a year later, things come full circle as the Queen and her band In This Moment return to Ford Center in Evansville with the notorious Motionless in White for what is sure to be a night of epic proportions.
After kicking off in early July, the Dark Horizon Tour’s lineup of Motionless in White, In This Moment, Fit for a King, and From Ashes to New will have played an impressive twenty- six shows before their stop at Ford Center on the 15th. Motionless in White formed in 2004, with several lineup changes through the years. The current roster features lead vocalist Chris “Motionless” Cerulli as the only original member of the band; however, guitarists Ryan Sitkowski and Ricky “Horror” Olson’s tenures stretch back more than a decade, while bassist Justin Morrow and Vinny Mauro have five-plus years of touring with the band under their belts. The group released their debut full length album, Creatures, in 2010 to accolades praising the band’s ability to set themselves apart from the droves of artists in their genre. Infamous followed in 2012, leaving behind strict metalcore to weave in subgenres and evolve their sound. “A-M-E-R-I-C-A” from that album is a favorite and continues to get moderate radio time over a decade later. Motionless went on to release three more full length albums ahead of their most recent Scoring the End of the World, which debuted in June of 2022 and topped American rock lists, hitting the coveted #1 spot on Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums chart. Their artistry extends beyond music, with full makeup and costumes adding individuality to their sets. Motionless and co. finish up The Dark Horizon tour in New York on the 19th and take a short break before embarking on their Touring the End of the World tour with Knocked Loose, After Burial, and Alphawolf. Co- headlining with Motionless in White is the aforementioned Queen of metal herself, Maria Brink. Forming in 2005, her band originally was billed as Dying Star before changing their name and musical direction, becoming In This Moment later that same year. The band has seven full-length studio albums with an eighth, Godmode, slated for release in late October of this year. The first radio single from the album, “The Purge,” has been a frequent player on SXM Octane in recent weeks. The song features hypnotic vocals, ominous instrumentals, true to the theme with In This Moment. Brink’s voice is recognizable and theatrical, which is fitting considering her over the top performances rife with special effects and dancers. Despite the chaos around her, Brink never fails to be the center of attention when on stage. The combination of Brink and Motionless sets up for an unforgettable night of rock music. | Erica Vining
