Folks, Sheer Mag are coming back to town and this is your chance to see one of the last great rock bands this dying world may ever give us. If you were too scared to ask a punk for the deets when they played Bonerville back in 2014 and missed every other time they came through because of some bullshit called work, this is your chance to get right with the universe. Sheer Mag sounds like that stuff your dad would put on when he would get sad about the motorcycle your mom made him sell when you were born, just without the misogyny and racism. Singer Tina Halladay has a unmistakable voice that drips with power and emotion, and that alone would be enough for most bands to get by, but the rest of the band is also pretty tight. Guitarists Kyle Seely and Matt Palmer play like they’re trying to remind people that you don’t need a pedalboard the size of a cellar door to write good riffs. Sheer Mag’s music is a perfect mix of punk ethos and classic rock stylings, an inspired update of nicotine-stained motifs for the modern era. It’s something special, and something that should not be missed.
Third Man Records just reissued their entire catalog, and orders are set to ship later this month. Note that there are no goofy limited edition vinyls that look like a small chunk of Pop Tart crushed under a microscope slide. If you haven’t listened to their debut album Need to Feel Your Love with the windows down on a long ride, you are missing out on one of the most accessible and sublime pleasures you can experience in this life or any other.
