Speaking with Spirits, Learning to Live | “Long Island Medium”‘s Theresa Caputo

06.26.18, 7:30 PM | The Fabulous Fox Theatre, 527 N. Grand Blvd. | $43.25-$93.25

Theresa Caputo has starred in the TLC reality television series Long Island Medium since 2011 and has published three books (including her latest, last year’s Good Grief, published by Atria Books) about channeling, honoring your loved ones, and how to heal from loss. During our interview, she talked about how privileged she feels to work with the people for whom she channels.

Theresa has a polarizing effect on people: either they absolutely adore her or they can’t stand her. It seems, though, that most people who don’t like her don’t like mediums at all, so it could be a general bias. Whether you like her or not, she has undeniable charisma and seems to be awfully nice

The Arts STL: Mediums in the limelight seem to have harsh criticism. How do you deal with this?
Theresa Caputo:
I don’t really feel that way. I feel like I’m very supported. I don’t really get on social media, it’s more of a platform for my fans and people who follow me. But I understand and respect the fact that people might not understand what I do. That’s never really my goal or intention. I just want people to know that there is more to life than just here on the physical world, and more importantly that their loved ones are here with them.

Anyone can say whatever they want about what I do, but there are things that Spirit talks about that there is no way I could know about. They talk about your own personal experiences and your personal feelings. No one can tell you how to feel. You can think what you think about what I do, but no one can tell you how you feel, and if Spirit able to validate that—[that] to me is amazing.

What is the most important thing that you share with your clients?

It’s all about healing and validation. That is it. I never want Spirit to tell us what we should or shouldn’t do in our lives, the choices or decisions…those things are all up to us. Those are free will choices. What I want Spirit to do is to give us that peace. What I learned from Spirit is that unfortunately, we’re left with burdens and guilt after they die. So if we’re beating ourselves up with these burdens and guilt, we can’t heal. How are we going to grow and experience life in a positive way? We’re not going to. So, by Spirit acknowledging them, I know that they’ll let things go, and don’t waste time and energy and remember the good times. They want us to let go of these burdens.

Do you ever turn your gift off?

It’s so funny, every interview this morning has asked the same question! I don’t even know how this works, but it’s not like I turn it on and say “Okay, 1-2-3 Go Spirit.”  It doesn’t work like that, it just happens. Even on Long Island Medium, if I’m out and about during my day and I approach someone, that means that Spirit has pushed me enough to say something to them. It’s not “on” or “off,” but whether Spirit pushes me or wants me to say something.

Doesn’t it wear you out?

After a long day at work, are you tired? Yeah? Exactly. It takes more energy for me to block the soul, especially when it’s a live show like when I’m in St. Louis, I’m going to feel very invigorated. I’m going to have a lot of energy. It’s going to take me about an hour to wind down after channeling Spirit.  We’re all special in the physical world. We all have jobs that help people. Like, you, you help people with your writing. I always ask people, are you married? Do you have kids, and a fulltime job – aren’t you tired? This is another validation for me because I know that I physically and emotionally was meant to do this.

What is one thing that you wish people knew about you?

What you see is what you get. I’m still friends with three of my best friends from middle school. People say, “She can’t really be like that.” But my friends say, “No, you’re right! She’s much more dramatic than that!” But they’ll say that “Theresa has been the same since she was fourteen.” We all change, because that’s what life is about. People change, you’re not the same as you were five or ten years ago. But I feel blessed to be able to do this kind of work and to be able to change and to help so many people. It’s so rewarding and such an honor and a privilege to be able to channel for the departed. I have not one regret in my life. I feel so blessed. | Melissa Cynova
