About this week’s artist:

Curtis J, American songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, initially garnered acclaim with the St. Louis-based punk-blues wrecking crew Kentucky Knife Fight before migrating to New York City. His musical career has since spanned three continents and innumerable tours with the likes of the Black Keys, Jason Isbell, Old 97’s, and the Drive-By Truckers.

Through studying eclectic discographies ranging from Jeff Buckley to Harry Nilsson, he developed into a polished solo performer and songwriter. His own music emotes deeply introspective lyrics melded with his singular melodies and push/pull musical acrobatics. At times a melancholic balladeer, other times a raucous showman, Curtis J’s live show highlights his skills as a dynamic band leader and exceptional guitar prowess.

Curtis J’s newest release The Singles: 2018-23 tracks his explosive development through his early New York years. The arrangements are conscious odes to the independent radio format: one song exuding the primal rock n’ roll of rebellious youth with the next delivering the warmth of timeless American groove music.

Leaning more Byrne than Dylan, more Bowie than Prince, his writing mixes the emotionality of confessional songwriting with enough rock n roll bravado to keep you guessing what he’s been listening to.
