About this week’s artist:
Guitarist Josiah Joyce plays a wide variety of songs from jazz to rock to pop with as much sonic variation as he and his pedal board can muster with Drew Weiss providing accompaniment on the drums, cymbals, shakers, tambourines, woodblocks, etc.
Josiah spent most of his early life moving from places as far and wide as Omaha, Nebraska to Rammstein, Germany as a military brat. After touring Europe in a successful band, he earned his degree in Jazz performance at SIUE. In 2015, he joined the United States Air Force Band and continues to thrive as a genre-defining guitarist in the St. Louis area.
Growing up in Omaha, Drew relocating to the St. Louis area over 20 years ago from New Orleans, where he attended Loyola University. In his time here, Drew has been fortunate enough to play with a wide range of people making all types of music while teaching privately on a regular basis and working a classic ‘day job.’
Since meeting two years ago, Josiah and Drew became fast friends and musical companions. Their shared interest in playing any good song, entertaining listeners, and improvising to see where it can go, makes for music they hope is fun to listen to, with a few surprises and, most of all, joyful.
What is the song about?
It is inspired by the song writer Connie Converse, who disappeared without anyone hearing her music until years later. It is kind of an alternate ending to her song ‘’I Have Considered the Lilies,” as much an instrumental song can be anyway.
What led you to create music in the first place?
We met playing with some other people and just felt some kind of kindship and maybe the potential to do something cool and fun together.
What bands are you currently performing with?
Whomever will have us.
What makes Josie & Drew unique?
Maybe the instrumentation of just guitar and drums. Outside of that, maybe an honest interest and excitement to play any kind of tune with some sort of jazz sensibility.
What’s next for you?
Just keeping up with the usual schedule and hoping to add more tunes while trying to get a little better doing what we do.
