On Tour: Angel Olsen | 01.28.23, The Factory

w/ Erin Rae | 8:00 pm | 17105 North Outer 40 Road, Chesterfield | All ages | $34.50 adv, $40 day of show

This Saturday, join indie folk sensation Angel Olsen for a joyous reunion with her St. Louis family. Ask Olsen the “St. Louis question” and she will tell you: Tower Grove Christian High School. Olsen launched her career in Chicago and currently lives in Asheville, NC.

Olsen’s diverse 2010s output was consistently great, and she grows stronger and more confident with each new release. Her music ranges from funereal slowcore to sweetly sad ‘70s country throwback. Olsen’s 2014 critical breakthrough, Burn Your Fire for No Witness, was a widely-acclaimed indie smash. Its slow pace, cryptic lyrics, and romantic, melancholy atmosphere drew comparisons to slowcore artists like Low and Red House Painters.

The next release, 2016’s MY WOMAN, expanded her musical palette—faster tempos, more upbeat and immediate lyrics, and even a splash of synthesizer. It’s her most popular release to date and the point of entry for many new fans.

In 2019 Olsen released the mysterious and musically ambitious All Mirrors. The title hints at its dark, psychedelic vibe and the many facets of Olsen’s artistic persona. All Mirrors experiments with unorthodox strong structures and lyrical abstraction, feeling at times like an American folk response to Björk.

Olsen’s setlist will probably contain fan favorites like the poppy “Shut Up Kiss Me” and the ethereal title track from All Mirrors. You can also expect a healthy dose of country heartache from her 2022 album Big Time. Adrift in heavenly steel guitar and melancholy piano, Big Time feels like a contemporary update of classic country artists like Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton.

Olsen will be joined by special guest Erin Rae. Doors open at 7:00. Keep in mind that The Factory is cashless, so backwoods survivalist types may be inconvenienced. | Rob Von Nordheim
