Acclaimed indie folk group Fleet Foxes will take the stage at The Factory this Saturday. The show is part of their 2023 summer tour in support of their most recent studio album, Shore, released in September 2020. They are joined by Nigerian singer/songwriter Uwade Akhere, who also contributed vocals on Shore.

Formed in Seattle in 2006, Fleet Foxes consists of lead songwriter/vocalist/guitarist Robin Pecknold, guitarist/mandolin player Skyler Skjelset, keyboardist Casey Wescott, bassist Christian Wargo, and percussionist/bassist/violinist Morgan Henderson. All members of the group are multi-instrumentalists who make diverse contributions to their albums, including the effervescent vocal harmonies that are one of the group’s signatures. Their eponymous 2008 album was heralded as an instant classic by many critics, ushering in a new millennium revival of the soothing folk-rock that artists like Crosby, Stills, & Nash and Joni Mitchell pioneered in the late 1960s. (As if to prove that connection, this week the group released a live cover of Mitchell’s “Hejira.”) This was followed by Helplessness Blues in 2011, considered the group’s finest work by many, and Crack-Up in 2017.

In recent years, Fleet Foxes’ releases have increasingly become a solo showcase for Pecknold’s arrangements. None of his bandmates appear on Shore, and the band’s most recent release, the 2021 live album A Very Lonely Solstice, consists of a solo acoustic performance Pecknold recorded at the St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church in Brooklyn, NY. Despite this, the group continues to tour as a full band.

The upcoming Factory show will only be Fleet Foxes’ third performance in St. Louis throughout their 15-year career. They previously performed at the Pageant in 2011 while touring Helplessness Blues, and at the Peabody Opera House during their 2018 Crack-Up tour. | David Von Nordheim
