w/ Dana Anderson | Off Broadway, 3509 Lemp Ave. | All ages | $12 advance, $15 day of show
Ike Reilly is a Chicago musician who sings like his life is on the line. Maybe it is. The lyrics range from heartfelt songs to his kids to bawdy bar songs and political creeds. His shows are completely electrifying and you won’t often see someone sitting down during them. The instruments compliment the lyrics and when playing with a band, Ike lets them shine, as well. I think I knew more about his crew than I did about him after the last gig.
Because of his political work, I consider him a folk singer. Folk music is the music of the people and you don’t get more “of the people” than this. You can see yourself in his music, and even if you don’t know the words, you’ll find yourself humming the tunes after the show.
One of the things I like best about Reilly’s shows is his interaction with the crowd. You always hear that performers feed off of the energy of the crowd and you can actually see that happening when he plays. His albums catch that energy, from his first release Salesmen and Racists to the new release Crooked Love, which comes out on May 18th, 2018.
Ike Reilly will be at Off Broadway on May 12, 2018. If ever there were a show that would take your mind off of your troubles while you drink a beer (and your shoes will likely stick on the floor, but that’s cool), this is it. | Melissa Cynova
