On Tour: Machine Girl | 12.07.22, Red Flag

7:30pm | Red Flag, 3040 Locust St. | All ages | $22

Have you ever had this problem: you want to mosh to hardcore punk, rave to footwork, and stomp to industrial, all at the same time? Machine Girl is the solution. Long Island-based sonic terrorist Matt Stephenson’s work (abetted by percussionist Sean Kelly) is surreal sonic overload with copious references to trash anime.

Machine Girl’s discography is a sprawling mix of studio albums, EPs, DJ mixes, and even game soundtracks. Fans of footwork will probably rate 2014’s WLFGRL or the 2020 comp RePorpoised Phantasies as their best. For moshers and rivetheads, there’s …Because I’m Young Arrogant and Hate Everything You Stand For, released in 2017.

The 2018 follow-up, Ugly Art, is an interesting synthesis of these two distinct sounds. It was unfairly labeled as a Death Grips knockoff when it was first released, but time has been kind. The track titles hint at MG’s penchant for absurd pop culture references (“A Song Called Clive Barker”) and political polemics (“F*ck Your Guns”).

Come to Red Flag dressed in combat boots and your favorite anime tee. Doors open at 6:30 and the show starts at 7:30. | Rob Von Nordheim
