My Morning Jacket (MMJ) will bring their fall 2023 tour to the Stifel Theatre next Tuesday, November 7th. The group is on the final leg of a massive US tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their third studio album, It Still Moves. Released in September 2003, It Still Moves greatly expanded MMJ’s fanbase, earning them widespread acclaim for its infusion of Buffalo Springfield-style country rock with a contemporary indie rock sensibility. The album was also MMJ’s debut on Dave Matthews’ ATO Records, which has distributed every MMJ record since.

Formed in Louisville, KY in 1998, the lineup of MMJ has remained unchanged for the past two decades: vocalist and guitarist Jim James, bassist Tom “Two-Tone” Blankenship, drummer Patrick Hallahan, keyboardist Bo Koster, and guitarist Carl Broemel (who also plays saxophone and pedal steel guitar). The group is famous for their high-intensity live performances, which find them greatly expanding the studio versions of their songs through deft improvisation and Jim James’ inimitable vocal stylings. Their concerts have been documented through several live albums released over the years, with their 2004 Bonnaroo performance being particularly legendary among fans, as the band dauntlessly continued to play through a massive downpour that began halfway through their set.

Next Tuesday’s show will mark MMJ’s first performance in St. Louis since November 2021, and their fourth performance at the Stifel overall. They have also played the Pageant previously (in 2006 and 2011), and even played the celebrated nightclub Mississippi Nights on the original tours for It Still Moves (in 2004) and Z (in 2005).

The night will begin at 7:00PM with a set from Nashville soul artist Devon Gilfillian, who also supported MMJ during their European tour earlier this summer. In keeping with their reputation as a peerless live act, MMJ play a different setlist every night while on tour, although longtime fans should expect to hear many staples from throughout their discography, with a heavy emphasis on their iconic mid-2000s material. | David Von Nordheim
