I first found The Bobby Lees on a tiny side stage under a tent at Muddy Roots Music Festival in 2019. They weren’t exactly on anyone’s radar going into the festival, but you bet it was love at first sight for all witnesses to that gloriously crusty scene. Scheduled in between The Dwarves and Eyehategod, they were perfect for the venue—sweaty, scowling, wild, and raw. They twitched and staggered across the stage as if compelled by some magnetic force that alternately drew them closer and repelled them back. They became instant darlings of the Muddy Roots festival-goers, and we beg for their return every year.
The guitars are guttural and gritty, the drums are nimble and punchy, and in addition to the snarling vocals, there’s a shiver reminiscent of The Cramps skittering across the erratic range of Fever to Tell-era Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The attitude is a little too honest and completely oblivious. They’re endearingly unselfconscious. They’re the real deal.
And musical legends have noticed. Jon Spencer has produced them. Ipecac has signed them. And true to ‘real deal’ form, they are playing some odd spaces on this tour, including an American Legion hall and a sports club. In our case, this tidal wave will break over the outdoor stage of The Record Space, a record store off Gravois with exceptional offerings in all things loud and rowdy.
I was heartbroken when their St. Louis stop opening for Helmet got cancelled last fall, and I’ve been stalking with envy as they play all around the world… well, our time has finally come! This is probably the last time you’ll see them in this sort of venue. I’m not asking how it happened, but I am thanking my lucky stars and showing up early. | Courtney Dowdall
