Ten years ago, the music industry was seemingly in a place where it was trying to figure out just how many EDM acts could be sustained at once. The new festival culture was in full bloom and the kids couldn’t get enough of this crazy music called dubstep. Just as much as there was landfill indie, there was landfill EDM. For every JUSTICE, Skrillex, or Steve Aoki, there were dozens of young men in unapologetically loud hoodies with a Macbook bringing the wub wub and the boom tisk to dingy clubs across Middle America for just enough money to refill the smoke machine and make it to the next town. Like the once plentiful buffalo, these dudes with a cracked copy of Ableton and a dream to do DMT that isn’t diluted with wiper fluid have mostly disappeared. A genre that once felt exhausting to contemplate has become something that can be revisited with fresh ears and, for those who take that journey, there are plenty of acts new and old that are worth your time. May I suggest ZEDS DEAD as a starter and, lucky you, they’re going to be at The Factory December 29th.
The Canadian duo of Dylan “DC” Mamid and Zachary “Hooks” Rapp-Rovan started making their name in the late 2000s through a growing presence on Myspace and by performing weekly shows in Toronto. From those early days, ZEDS DEAD have gone on to work with a dizzying number of musicians and performers across numerous genres, and have found themselves becoming quite the festival mainstay over the last 10 years, proving that they’re more than just two guys with an impeccable taste in jackets. In fact, even a casual listen to their discography reveals a deep sense of creativity and diversity within their sonic territory, from chill out to dubstep to hip hop, and dozens of micro-genres in between. Their live show spectacle is no slouch, with an impressive visual component that is bound to impress anyone, regardless of whether they get served Facebook ads for Chinese research chemicals or not.
ZEDS DEAD are coming off hot from three sold-out performances at The Salt Shed in Chicago, and I’ve gotten word that this show is going to be something special. Start your NYE weekend off right at the Factory on December 29th.
