Rising alt-country rockers Wednesday played a raw and passionate set, drawing mainly from their latest release, Rat Saw God. It’s their most popular work to date and it will no doubt make many critics’ “Best of 2023” lists.
Wednesday features the talents of Karly Hartzman, MJ Lenderman, Alan Miller, and Xandy Chelmis. The band serves up plenty of noisy southern discomfort ala Drive-By Truckers, but their abstract songwriting and shoegaze-influenced guitar sound should appeal to indie rock fans of all stripes.
Wednesday was joined by LA-based dream pop group Cryogeyser, who joined the band onstage for “The Burned Down Dairy Queen.” The set ended with an explosive performance of the eight-minute “Bull Believer.” Like a great match of Mortal Kombat, the bruising set ended with chants of “FINISH HIM.” | Rob Von Nordheim
