About this week’s artist:

Ryan Cheney, a driving force behind the rock sensation Fivefold, is a musical maverick known for weaving soul-stirring stories through his melodies. With a passion deeply rooted in the rich tapestry of folk and rock, Cheney’s solo endeavors serve as a vessel for him to breathe life into the songs he’s always yearned to hear.

What brought you to this point in your life as a working St. Louis artist?

Honestly, there is nothing else in the world I’d rather be doing than writing songs and playing shows. It’s my connection to the world. I feel I didn’t have a choice in the matter.

What inspires your music? What does this song in particular mean to you?

My experiences and outlook inspire what I write. I wouldn’t even say I ever intentionally write a song about something. Kind of just happens that way. This song is called “Going Down Alone.” It’s a lonesome tune. Relaying the similarities between a failing relationship to a sinking ship. It’s open to interpretation though!

Who in St. Louis are you inspired by right now?

I’m loving the entire folk, indie scene at the moment. Just good people from all backgrounds living the troubadour life. I was kind of thrown into the rock scene early on so I was late to the party. Love me some Nick Gusman, Adam Gafney, Stoker, there’s too many to count!

What bands are you performing with lately?

I’m pretty busy with Fivefold currently and everything going on in that camp. As soon as it calms down, though, I’d love to book some shows with some of the greats in this city. A Ryan Cheney and Screechin’ Halts show would be a doozy.

Where do you hope to be in 5 years?

Living my best life. Still playing my music as well as with Fivefold. Would love to fulfill my dream of being a full-time songwriter. Hopefully with a Stag Beer in my hand.
