Ashnikko is bringing her unmistakable genre-bending music to the Pageant on October 13th, 2023. Her recently released debut record Weedkiller condenses her years of virality and collaborations with the likes of GRIMES, Princess Nokia, and Doja Cat into 14 songs that come across as an angry treatise on the modern day though a lens of dark futurism. Her music is brash and upfront, and it is hard to not make comparisons to Melanie Martinez and MIA, or take it further back to Peaches and Princess Superstar. Songs like “You Make Me Sick!” and “Cheerleader” may shock at first, but further listens reveal a subversive pop motif that would scandalize any guy with a dumb haircut that works at Guitar Center.
On Weedkiller, Ashnikko rebels against shitty people and shitty beliefs, and goes about it in brazen and unapologetic fashion that would fine one hard-pressed not to be on her side. It should be one hell of a show. | Bryan J. Sutter
