On tour: Max & Iggor Cavalera’s “Morbid Devastation” Tour w/ Exhumed and Incite | 09.10.23, Delmar Hall

Max & Iggor Cavalera w/ Exhumed and Incite | 7:00 PM | 6133 Delmar Blvd. | All ages | $29.50–35

Metal royalty will grace St. Louis this Sunday as Max and Iggor Cavalera bring their 2023 “Morbid Devastation” tour to Delmar Hall. They are joined by the long-running California goregrind band Exhumed, and Incite, a groove metal band based in Phoenix, AZ.

The Cavalera brothers, founding members of the highly influential Brazilian thrash metal band Sepultura, are touring in support of their re-recordings of Sepultura’s two earliest releases, Bestial Devastation and Morbid Visions. Originally released in 1985 and 1986 respectively, both are celebrated today as pivotal releases in the early history of extreme metal. The 2023 re-recordings were released through Nuclear Blast earlier this summer under the name Cavalera Conspiracy (or simply Cavalera for short). Although both Max and Iggor split from Sepultura many years ago, they viewed the re-recordings as an opportunity to revisit their back catalog while giving the material some much-needed modern polish:

“I always felt like the recordings of our earlier work didn’t do justice to the way we performed the songs. So, this is a very special moment in our lives that we are very proud to show you real fans our true representation of the amazing records Bestial Devastation and Morbid Visions with an insane visual identity,” said Iggor Cavalera (as quoted by Blabbermouth).

In addition to Max (vocals and guitar) and Iggor (drums), the lineup for the current Cavalera band features Igor Cavalera Jr. on bass—who is actually the son of Max Cavalera and nephew of Iggor Cavalera—and Travis Stone on lead guitar, known for his work with the grindcore band Pig Destroyer (he and Igor Jr. also play in the band Healing Magic). Metal has always been a family affair for the Cavalera brothers: in addition to Igor Jr. playing bass on the tour, the vocalist for Incite is Richie Cavalera, who is Max’s stepson. Another of Max’s sons, Zykon Cavalera, has been drumming for his band Soulfly since 2013.

Max and Iggor were last in St. Louis together in 2016, when they played the entirety of Sepultura’s 1996 groove metal classic Roots at Pop’s during their “Return to Roots” tour. More recently, Max Cavalera performed with Soulfly, his primary music project, at Red Flag in August 2021. | David Von Nordheim
