This week’s episode features Mattie Schell performing her original, “Let You Let Me.”
What brought you to this point in your life as a working St. Louis artist?
I have been performing on stage from a very young age. I’ve always had the support of my parents in musical endeavors. Making music is the only career path I’ve ever considered. With the help of many amazing teachers and mentors, and the unwavering support of my family and my husband, I’ve been working full time as a musician since 2016 and I’ve never looked back.
What inspires your music? What does this song in particular mean to you?
Like most songwriters, I tend to draw from real life experiences. The story is always key. This song is called “Let You Let Me.” It’s a song about being grateful for every journey. I’m thanking someone who did me wrong, because had things gone differently, I would be who I am or where I’m at today. A sort of “god bless the broken road” message.
Who in St. Louis are you inspired by right now?
My friend Jackson Stokes is an incredibly inspiring performer. He is one of the most talented and hardworking people I’ve ever met. He always practices gratitude. I’m not the best at remaining positive when the going gets tough. He’s constantly putting positivity into the world and is everyone’s biggest supporter. That’s inspiring to me.
What bands are you performing with lately?
I’m currently on the road with the Allman Betts Family Revival. It’s become a yearly tradition and it’s such a blast to play the Allman Brothers catalog with such talented musicians and friends.
Where do you hope to be in 5 years?
I just signed a three-record, five-year deal with Compass Records so in five years, hopefully I’ll be three solo records deep and touring around the world with my husband. I love being on the road and the pace of it really suits me. The chance to do that with the person I love most would be a dream come true.

Mattie, this great! I hope you go far; I’ve been impressed with you since the first time I saw you on the livestream from Devon’s house during Covid. And, I agree with you – Jackson Stokes is truly a positive influence on anyone that knows him!!
This song of Mattie’s is killer with or without a back up musicians. The story does need to credit these 3 talented musicians behind Mattie.
Sounds good
