On Tour: Death Grips | 07.26.23, The Factory

8:00 PM | 17105 North Outer 40 Road, Chesterfield | All ages | $45-65.50

Experimental hip hop trio Death Grips will play the Factory on Wednesday, marking their first show in St. Louis in over a decade. Death Grips’ only other St. Louis performance was at the former midtown venue The Firebird in June 2013, during the tour for their breakthrough album The Money Store.

Formed in Sacramento, CA in 2010, Death Grips consists of rapper Stefan Burnett (a.k.a. MC Ride) and producers/multi-instrumentalists Andy Morin and Zach Hill. Starting with the release of their debut mixtape Exmilitary in 2011, the group quickly became one of the most recognizable forces in the modern underground, with their eclectic, uncompromising music earning them crossover appeal with fans of experimental rap, industrial/electronic music, and noise rock alike. Since then, Death Grips has released eight albums and four EPs, the most recent being Gmail and the Restraining Orders, released in January 2021. Their releases frequently find them playing with the tension between Burnett’s intense vocal delivery and persona and the eclectic, prankster-ish production sensibilities of Morin and Hill.

Despite their popularity, Death Grips has always remained committed to a DIY aesthetic, a stance exemplified through their cryptic approach to announcing new music and communicating with their fans. The group had a notorious falling out with Sony Music in 2012 after their then-label Epic, which published their debut album The Money Store, refused to allow them to release another album the same year. This prompted Death Grips to break contract and self-release No Love Deep Web (complete with its hilariously, bluntly NSFW artwork)through their own imprint, Third Worlds, which has released every subsequent Death Grips release since.

Death Grips’ current North America tour, their first since 2019, kicked off in early May and will feature 54 shows before ending in October. There is no supporting act for the tour, with Death Grips instead performing a double set featuring songs from across their discography. | David Von Nordheim
