St. Louis underground metal kings The Lion’s Daughter play their final gig | 06.21.25, Off Broadway

The Lion’s Daughter Farewell Show| w/ Fister, Sine Nomine, Path of Might, and Furnace Floor | 8:00pm, 06.21.25 | 3509 Lemp Ave. | All ages | $19.05

This Saturday, one of St. Louis’ preeminent metal bands will hang up their proverbial spurs for one final gig at Off Broadway. The Lion’s Daughter has long been a fixture of the St. Louis independent metal scene, releasing their first album, Hemimetabolous, in 2011. After developing a passionate local fanbase and online following, they were signed to the French independent metal label Season of Mist, releasing their first album for the label, Existence is Horror, in 2016. (Fans of underground metal are undoubtedly familiar with Season of Mist’s impressive roster, featuring envelope-pushing bands such as Gorguts, Ne Obliviscaris, and Thy Catafalque.) The Lion’s Daughter went on to release four albums for the label with their final release, 2023’s Bath House, being arguably their most ambitious work to date.

Like the accomplished company they kept on Season of Mist, The Lion’s Daughter is a difficult project to summarize using conventional genre labels. There are elements of classic heavy metal, black metal, sludge metal, and even electronic dance music, with these elements often coexisting in the span of a single song (listen to their track “12-31-89” for a great example of this versatility). A band this ambitious, weird, and creative is destined to live on in the archives of the internet metal nerd fandom for decades to come, and I for one am prepared to proudly wear a Lion’s Daughter t-shirt in every metal gig I attend going forward to do my part in spreading the good word. (Rick, hit me up for my mailing address, I’m a size M…)

Saturday’s show will be a packed bill of St. Louis underground metal goodness, including the Arch City’s favorite stoner/doom metal band, Fister, as well as some promising recent bands (Sine Nomine, Path of Might, and Furnace Floor). All proceeds from the event will benefit the Stray Rescue of St. Louis, so even if you are unable to attend, please consider making a donation through their website.

If you regret being late to the party on The Lion’s Daughter, fear not: you can always support frontman Rick Giordano by buying a slice at his metal-themed pizzeria, the Headless Bat, located just south of Tower Grove Park. Rest in Pizza, The Lion’s Daughter! | David von Nordheim
