When the Battlehawks entered their own stadium, the BattleDome, on Saturday, they had one clear objective: secure a playoff berth with a win. The cards seemed stacked in their favor against their opponent, the Houston Gamblers, as the Battlehawks were undefeated at home this season. The Battlehawks also seemed to be the stronger team as they were 5-2 and coming off a three-game winning streak against the 2-5 Gamblers.

The Battlehawks started the game with a field goal, but quickly found themselves in a hole after the Gamblers scored a passing touchdown from quarterback, Hunter Dekkers to wider receiver Jontre Kirklin. Then on the Battlehawks drive, Perez threw an interception to cornerback Kary Vincent Jr. for a 35-yard return for touchdown. Houston was up 14-3 with over four minutes to go in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Battlehawks offense crawled down the field and added a couple of field goals, but the Gamblers kept pace with them and scored a long touchdown from Dekkers to Lawrence Keys III, this time for 35 yards. Houston missed the extra point, but led St. Louis 20-9 at half-time. The favored Battlehawks were struggling on both sides of the ball and their play was filled with numerous mistakes such as false starts and poor coverage by the secondary. The best defense in the league was on its heals against the 2-5 Gamblers.

Though the Battlehawks defense found some of their fire in the second half and held the Gamblers to only one field goal, the offense still struggled to find its groove. The Battlehawks went scoreless in the third quarter before finally scoring a touchdown with 10:41 left on the clock in the fourth. 23-16, Houston. The Gambler’s offense began to struggle in the fourth, but the Battlehawks did as well, turning the ball over with 3:48 left on the clock.

St. Louis managed to get the ball back one more time with 1:53 left on the clock, needing a touchdown and extra point to tie the game. The Battlehawks did make a final valiant effort, but the clock ran out on them as they lined up on Houston’s three yard line. Gamblers won, 23-16.

Despite bringing in a proven quarterback in Luis Perez, the Battlehawks offense sill struggled to be efficient when needed. Some of the same issues that Brandon Silvers and Harrison Frost had seem to be issues for Perez as well. Though he threw for 308 yards, he also threw only one touchdown to two interceptions and only a 55% completion rate. During Saturday’s game, the Battlehawks struggled to get calls sent in time resulting in rushed plays that seemed to not have a chance to be carried out. Perez dealt with a numerous high and off-center snaps that threw off his focus and composure when making snaps.

The Battlehawks had some luck Saturday as the D.C. Defenders lost their game and also failed to secure playoff berth. The Battlehawks go into week 9 on the road to face the Gamblers again. The Battlehawks are still second in the league and still have a strong chance to make the playoffs. | Ryan Parker
