Lake Street Dive managed to play in St. Louis in between heavy rains. They kicked off with the title track of their new album Good Together and you know what? They really were, mixing in decade-old favorite like “Bad Self Portraits” with the new tracks seamlessly.

The crowd didn’t miss a beat. It’s always great when the audience is down with new tracks as well as with the older songs. Regardless of how familiar the track was, St. Louis showed up in fine form to sing and dance.

We were treated to songs written by every member of the band, and the Boston indie group made you wonder why they’re not a mainstream band yet. What the hell, people? Folks in the audience were actually boogieing and I saw at least three or four that were grooving. The music invites you to listen to your parents party downstairs. You peek through the railings and have only the smell of weed and the music floating up the stairs to create your core memory.

It’s possible that “Good Together” reflected the flow that these five musicians have found. During a few songs, they scooted together into a cozy corner of the stage, proving that their vocals and (mostly) percussion were better played in close proximity. The intimacy of sound is something not often found. Not unless the bands are like Lake Street. As they sing, “We Love all the same Songs.” | Melissa Cynova
