It was a perfect summer night for the Head and the Heart show at Saint Louis Music Park. The stage was quite simple with a canopy of string lights and lots of stage fog. They don’t need a massive stage setup, their show is all about their songs, incredible harmonies and boundless energy performing all together. Their songs are so catchy and melodic, but that doesn’t mean they’re without meaning. I love this band and the way they are so simple yet so powerful when they perform. And can we please talk about those vocal harmonies? And a drummer that plays the drums hard—did no one tell him he was in an indie folk band? Seriously though…It was a wonderful evening, and their set was complete with their songs “All We Ever Knew,” “Ghosts,” and “Missed Connection.”
I love the opener, Phosphorescent. I’ve seen them several times in small venues, but never in a big outdoor summertime venue like tonight. Vocalist Matthew Houck complained about his voice having caught some ‘thing,’ but you would never know it. Somehow it all worked perfectly, especially as they closed their set with the ever ethereal “Song For Zula.” It. Was. Perfect. | Laura Jerele
