This is the second time I’ve seen Kevin Smith at the Pageant. The first time, I’d just gotten out of the hospital and he was so kind at the meet and greet. I got the biggest hug and the most supportive words. This is going to be a very positive review, because he has a special place in my heart.
He was traveling this time around with a friend, and the friend wanted to find regional foods—like the kinds you find at state fairs. Since there were no state fairs on the route, Kevin asked the crowd which foods St. Louis was known for. “IMO’s!” shouted those who love that crap, and “Don’t eat IMO’s” from the sane attendees. The crowd got rowdy and Imo’s tore the room apart.
They finally agreed that St. Louis fried rice was the way to go. It was also identified as hood rice. Keep it classy, St. Louis.
He regaled us with stories about his love of movies, and told us about his connection with his hometown movie theater. It was going to be closed when he stepped in to save it, and now it serves as kind of a second home base for Smith.
He told an amazing story about Danny Trejo and donuts, and managed to (necessarily) drop some names without coming across as a jerk.
It was when he spoke about his mental health troubles and his mom passing away that the audience got quiet. He’s our age, and going through the same struggles that we’re going through, and seems to be managing just fine.
I’ll be there the next time he comes to town, too.
