On tour: Clutch’s “No Stars Above” Tour | 05.12.23, The Factory

Clutch w/ Amigo the Devil and Nate Bergman | 5.12.23, 8:00 PM | The Factory, 17105 North Outer 40 Road, Chesterfield, MO | All ages | $37.50-59.50

Clutch, the hardest rocking band out of Frederick, MD, will headline the Factory this Friday. Formed in 1990, Clutch quickly earned a spot at the forefront of the ‘90s stoner rock movement, when bands like Kyuss and Monster Magnet were updating the sounds of ‘70s hard rock with a modern twist. Clutch has always consisted of the core lineup of drummer Jean-Paul Gaster, guitarist Tim Sult, bassist Dan Maines, and vocalist Neil Fallon. Fallon’s throaty, paint-stripping vocal delivery and quirky lyrics are arguably what make them stand apart from their peers (“Shadow of the New Praetorian/Tipping cows in fields Elysian/Saturnalia for all you have/The seven habits of the highly infected calve,” from “Burning Beard”).

Clutch is currently on the first leg of a massive four-month tour throughout the United States and Europe in support of their 14th album, Sunrise on Slaughter Beach, released in September 2022. Amigo the Devil and Nate Bergman—two singer-songwriters known for their witty and morose lyrics—will be supporting Clutch on their April and May tour dates, including the show at the Factory on May 12th. Clutch will then spend June playing several rock and metal festivals throughout Europe (Sweden Rock Festival, Download Festival, Graspop Metal Meeting, etc.). They will return to the U.S. in July to tour with Dinosaur Jr. and Red Fang, capping off with an appearance at this year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. Finally, they will spend most of August touring with Giovannie & the Hired Guns and Mike Dillion & Punkadelick.

Clutch was last in St. Louis in March 2022 for a headlining show at Pop’s, their fourteenth time (!) headlining at the Sauget nightclub. They have consistently toured in St. Louis throughout their three-decade career, including early shows at iconic venues like Club 367, Mississippi Nights, and the American Theater. They are known for changing their setlist every night while on tour, with nearly every album in their discography being represented. | David Von Nordheim
