You’ve been there: surfing down a YouTube rabbit hole for an unknown amount of time. One day I was doing just that when it led to quite the discovery: we’d watched quite a lot of Heilung videos (as we were significantly moved by that show) when we came across a post that said “Rock Orchestra cover Cranberries ‘Zombie’.” I dove in and was hooked. I watched their whole available catalog, followed them on everything, and searched for a tour hopeful but no, not then nor anytime soon. Fast forward to an algorithm that everyone despises but mine knows I love fire and I saw this performance group called The Fuel Girls—HOOKED, line and sinker. I zipped to being obsessed with their content. Recently the feed got to work on me yet again. “Rock Orchestra – Arena of Fire tour,” it said, and I didn’t hesitate to ask to cover this show.
I’m loving Saint Louis Music Park more every time I go. A massive outdoor space to get food, drinks, merch, and unwind, comfy seating, great sound, big stage—what more could a venue give you? The show began at 8pm sharp with no opening act, just an announcement of the unique show coming. Rock, metal, orchestra, fire, elite entertainers so GET READY. I was but I wasn’t at the same time in the best way.
The show would go full orchestra instrumental to a vocal performance and weave in classic compositions from Beethoven’s 5th to covers of “Kashmir” by Led Zepplin, Linkin Park’s “Numb” and “Sweet Child o’ Mine” by Guns N Roses. I quickly noted that the pyro performers WERE The Fuel Girls right away and my insides came alive. To merge so many things I love into one night started off at a very high level and just wouldn’t stop, to the overwhelming approval of a 95% full house. With practically no promotion and a project that’s not a household name, I was so happy inside to see the venue super-packed.
They epically carried on with “Dream On” by Aerosmith into “Stairway to Heaven,” showing the love to another Led Zeppelin classic. Under a beautiful full moon, we rocked through that one and rolled right into Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.” Two pieces simply called “Palladio” and “Opera” weaved in there seamlessly and kept the high rock excitement. Unexpectedly a beautiful rendition of “The Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel beautifully combined all of the elements as the sky darkened and the two female leads belted a sonically incredible piece. “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescence and System of a Down’s “Toxicity” would close the first of the two acts of the evening. The extreme pyro in the latter and the fullness of everyone performing at such an elite level really was clearly loved by the thunderous applause, proper metal whistling, and rock n’ roll horns from the large crowd.
The way you start an Arena of Fire second act is clearly “One” by Metallica and no one in the vicinity was neither quiet nor still. Everyone was up, everyone was headbanging from the stage to the merch area and likely beyond. “Back in Black” by Australia’s AC/DC spiraled into a cello solo so effortlessly that it felt like a movie soundtrack almost. “Paint it Black” by the Rolling Stones was flawless and led us into a fully instrumental take on GNR’s “Welcome to the Jungle.” A little naughty Korn “Freak on a Leash” had a female vocalist pulling a male vocalist around by a belt. So metal and so good.
How to even follow that? AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck.” Perfection.
As the night wore on in terms of time, it did not drop in excitement, fire, orchestral genius and literally taking us to church a la Hozier. I’m not sure I ever thought of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” being performed in this way and while this version was quite unique, it’s just not in Nirvana’s top songs (in my opinion) but I get that it is the go-to that everyone knows. The song that did translate well was the one that got me into this collective in the first place: “Zombie” was everything I’d hoped it’d be live when I first heard it. While the vocalists (two male, two female) rotated taking leads, the entire production was onstage for this one and they delivered a powerful version to the hordes of applause and adulation.
System of a Down’s music works extraordinarily well with the premise of this tour: Rock, fire, strings, drums, FIRE, rock, and more fire for “Chop Suey.” With one last song to go, we’d hoped it’d be “Welcome to the Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance and while a bit sad that it wasn’t, we weren’t that disappointed by getting Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name.” Hearing thousands of people, orchestral performers, superb vocalists, and girls twirling fire all chanting “Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me” was cathartic. From teens to elders, we all knew it, we all felt it, we all screamed it. It was an unbelievable evening from start to finish and I look forward to whatever wormhole I tumble down next. | Diane Ruff
