Singular alt-rock trio Blonde Redhead are hitting up Delmar Hall on February 27th in support of their latest record, 2023’s excellent Sit Down for Dinner. The band, composed of Kazu Makino and twin brothers Amedeo and Simone Pace, recently found their way back into the zeitgeist when their song “For the Damaged Coda” was used in the season 5 finale of Rick and Morty. While it was not the first time the song had been used in the series, it accompanied a major moment in the show’s narrative. It was a surprising second life for a piece of music originally released in the year 2000, and brought attention back to one of the most interesting indie bands of the last 30 years.
While Sit Down for Dinner is possibly the most subdued record put out so far by the group, it retains the lyrical sharpness and emotional musicality Blonde Redhead has honed over their previous nine studio releases. While their earlier work draws easy comparison to bands like Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine, tracks on Sit Down for Dinner like “Snowman” and “Before” could be compared to more contemporary acts like MGMT and The Smile. Rarely does a record about the impermanence of life and love sound so haunting and beautiful, and so rarely can a band retain the same spirit and energy over so many years, even as their sound greatly evolved.
