On tour: Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: In Concert 40th Anniversary | 10.08.26, The Factory

7:30pm | 17105 North Outer 40 Road | All ages | $39.75–$111

On June 27th, we celebrated 40 years of Labyrinth, Jim Henson’s brilliant and majestic—FLOP? Oh yes. Despite the film’s pedigree—directed by the beloved Muppet creator from a screenplay by Monty Python’s Terry Jones and starring rock legend David Bowie, not to mention an early starring role by a young Jennifer Connelly—it opened in 8th place at the box office, ultimately pulling in just over half of its production budget before it left theaters. But the legacy of the film was earned over these last four decades mostly came from the film’s release on home video, and it grew into the timeless classic so many are fond of to this day. In fact, in the STL we have a few hidden gems in our city that take us to that magic space: the Crack Fox bar, which has a gigantic mural of characters from the film, and one of St. Louis’s long time pop punk staples Ludo, whose band name references the adorable giant friend.

In the film, Connelly stars as Sarah, a teen stuck babysitting her infant brother. Annoyed by his crying, Sarah wishes that he be taken away by the goblins in the story book she was reading, only for Jareth the Goblin King (Bowie) to arrive and steal him away, giving Sarah just 13 hours to trek through a magical labyrinth or else her brother will become a goblin forever. The plucky Sarah heads out on her quest, bumping into a cast of fantastical characters straight out of the Jim Henson workshop through a series of beloved Bowie-sung musical numbers.

As part of a global tour to nearly 100 cities, “Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: In Concert” is heading to The Factory (17105 North Outer 40 Road) on Thursday, October 8, giving us a chance to witness the magic in person. The film will be onscreen while a live band performs the full soundtrack backing the late, great David Bowie’s vocals. I can’t wait to get lost in the fantasy as these characters and what’s sure to be a lively crowd sing and dance along with the Goblin King well into the evening. (Note: cosplay and dress-up is encouraged!) It goes without saying all of the joy that this event will be for longtime fans, but hopefully quite a few new ones to go on the fantastical journey with us. There won’t be anything remotely close to a celebration like this in our lifetime for a piece of film that still touches so many. | Diane Ruff
