Orvelle Peck has emerged as one of the most interesting musicians of the last few years. From his debut as a masked country crooner in 2019 with his evocative love songs and visually arresting music videos, Peck has had much respect put on his name from bona fide genre legends like Willie Nelson to contemporary drag queen superstar Trixie Mattel. The man even has his own signature Gretsch guitar, an inspired take on the manufacturer’s lux White Falcon hollowbody. Not bad for a guy that used to play drums in a punk band.
Orville Peck’s two studio releases have garnered wide acclaim, and his upcoming album of duets, Stampede, looks like it’s going to continue the trend. While the teaser EP of the full record, Stampede: Vol 1, exudes more polish and less subversion than Pony or Bronco, it is still as interesting and captivating as anything else he has released. While the cover of “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond Of Each Other” with Willie Nelson might be the main attraction, hearing Peck departing from his traditional vibe with Beck, Kylie Minogue, and Elton John is something that should not be passed up. He may not just be one of the few queer voices in country music, but he might just have one of the best voices period.
Orvelle Peck is thankfully hitting St. Louis July 30th at The Factory, his first show in the Gateway City since 2019, in support of what will likely be one of the records of the summer. Yee-haw. | Bryan J. Sutter
