On tour: Three Metal Heavies, One Night—Mastodon, Deafheaven, & Alcest | 10.17.26, The Pageant

7:00pm | 6161 Delmar Blvd. | All ages | $39.50–$60

This Saturday, October 17, the Delmar Loop will feel the slow-spreading, paralyzing sting of Mastodon and friends’ Poisonous Weapons Tour, coming to The Pageant with support from blackgaze stalwarts Deafheaven and Alcest.

French duo Neige and Winterhalter of Alcest open, offering black metal woven through a veil of shoegaze and post-metal fabrics. Touring off of 2024’s Les Chants de l’Aurore, the band continues its sonic dawn, rising up over cold water in the midst of winter.

Deafheaven follow. The San Francisco band has spent fifteen years alchemizing black metal, shoegaze, and post-metal into shimmering, sunny musical tomes, never quite following a certain path and always finding ways to move into a new direction. After scaling back their heavier qualities on 2021’s Infinite Granite (which I love, come at me), the band came roaring back four years later in 2025’s still beautiful, but also more vicious and sinister Lonely People With Power, a record that stands as one of their best. And only several days ago, the band dropped a surprise, three-song EP, At Work in the Fields of the Bomb, which I haven’t caught yet, but hear it may be as scary and intense as they’ve ever sounded.

And finally, Mastodon. It’s been an emotional year for the Atlanta outfit, having parted ways with founding guitarist Brent Hinds in 2025 and dealing with his subsequent death several months after. Marrow Deep, out since late August, is their first record without him, though his spirit lingers on as guitarist Nick Johnston and keyboardist João Nogueira join the fold to help Dailor, Sanders, and Kelliher process their feelings and channel them sonically into an LP surrounding the Three Fates of Greek lore and the depths of grief one can feel, marrow deep. It’s a moody, cathartic journey that still riffs heavy and loud, with guestwork from the likes of Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath), Neil Fallon (Clutch), Randy Blythe (Lamb of God), and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age).

After this run, Alcest head home to rest for a European next spring with Agriculture, while Deafheaven and Mastodon close out the season in Texas. | Zach K. Johnson
