Yellowcard is making up for lost time. The pop-punk band formed in Jacksonville, FL, in the late ’90s but it was the pairing of Ryan Key’s emotive vocals with the stylistic curveball of Sean Mackin’s violin on 2003’s “Ocean Avenue” that really turned heads, ultimately pushing the song’s parent album to double-platinum status. But after 20 years of world tours (and Warped Tours), the band called it quits in 2017.
The band saw a lot of lineup churn over the years, but their final lineup—Key, Mackin, guitarist Ryan Mendez, and bassist Josh Portman—held steady for the last several years, and it was that core lineup that reunited five years later for 2022’s Riot Fest. The reunion stuck, with 2023 seeing a tour for the 20th anniversary of Ocean Avenue (including a show at Saint Louis Music Park featuring support from local emo heroes Story of the Year), a set at the When We Were Young Festival, and the release of Childhood Eyes, an EP featuring the band’s first new music since 2016. This year sees the band not only on their current tour (the Summer Gods tour, supporting Third Eye Blind) but also the release of A Hopeful Sign, a collaboration with Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson, better known as the Nashville-based post-rock duo Hammock. The album reimagines some of Yellowcard’s fan favorites, but rather than having Hammock simply remix the songs using the existing master recordings, Key re-recorded the songs in slowed-down arrangements as just voice and piano, forming the foundation from which Hammock built their ambient soundscapes. Check out both the original and Hammock-ified versions of “Ocean Avenue” below. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit yellowcardband.com. | Jason Green
