Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit made a fabulous tour stop for a sold-out show at The Factory last night. For an artist as unshowy and laid back as Isbell is, the stage and impressive lighting rig seemed massive and it made The Factory feel very much like an arena show. His songs have tremendous feel and he’s the kind of understated performer that gives a lot in his performance without being in your face. Until he starts shredding on his guitar—then all bets are off and he’s pretty much melting your face. Isbell is an amazing singer-songwriter and I really enjoyed seeing what type of performer he would be live. You can tell he cares about giving a quality, emotional performance; “The Life You Choose” was especially a standout moment. I could tell the crowd loved “The King of Oklahoma” quite a bit—it was played early in his set but felt like the crowd maybe expected it to be closer to an encore. All in all, I loved it, I was super impressed with Isbell and his diverse and talented band—bassist Anna Butterss, guitarist Sadler Vaden, drummer Chad Gamble, and Derry deBorja on keyboards. | Laura Jerele
