There is a hole in my life. It’s not the band Hole, because I saw them at the Blue Note in 1994. It’s a distinct lack of Tori Amos. I am a Gen X woman, fully Lilith Fair’d and Grunged, but I never found Tori. Not even in my liberal arts college. It’s almost unthinkable. How could I have allowed such a thing to happen? Tori Amos is touring her 18th album right now, and it was the right time to bury myself in her songs.
So, I listened. To her newest album first, In Times of Dragons. I listened with Intent. I read the lyrics and had to listen to the first song again. Lyrics like…
“There is hierarchy
You should be pleased to serve
In any capacity
Capacity
I’m not asking”
…in the song called “Shush” gave me shivers. Especially when so much of our attention is being drawn to the rampant sexual assault of women. Shush yourself right now.
The album seriously made me want to punch the patriarchy right in its stupid face. “Gasoline Girls” made me want to start a riot. “Strawberry Moon” made me want to put together a coven to be part of that riot.
Tori Amos has been riveting audiences since she first hit the scene in the ’90s with her stunning lyrics and alt rock piano playing. She sings intensely personal lyrics with her classically trained piano soaring behind them. She is a force, and she sings important songs about life, religion, sexuality, and politics. Nothing is impersonal. All of it resonates.
As I was writing this, her 1991 single “Silent All These Years” started playing and I was instantly transported back to “I got the Anti-Christ in the kitchen yellin’ at me again” and yeah. I do know, Tori Amos. I just needed a reminder. | Melissa Cynova
